Abstract Multiobjective design optimization studies typically derive Pareto sets or use a scalar substitute function to capture trade-offs, leaving it up the designer’s intuition this information for refinements and decision-making. Understanding causality of trade-offs more deeply, beyond simple postoptimality parametric studies, would be particularly valuable in configuration problems guide redesign. This article presents method multiobjective monotonicity analysis identify root causes existence particular shape sets. process involves reducing models through constraint activity identification point where dependencies specific set constraints that cause them are revealed. The insights gained can then used target changes. We demonstrate proposed approach preliminary medical device oral drug delivery.
